Energetics, thermoregulation and torpor in the Chilean mouse-opossum Thylamys elegans (Didelphidae) RChHN
Bozinovic,Francisco; RuÍz,Gricelda; CortÉs,Arturo; Rosenmann,Mario.
In this paper we studied the energetic expenditure and thermoregulation of the Chilean mouse-opossum Thylamys elegans (Dielphidae) a nocturnal small marsupial, endemic of southern South America. We studied their standard energetic and determined whether they exhibit shallow daily torpor or deep prolonged torpor as a function of ambient temperature and food availability. Thylamys elegans partially supports the hypothesis that Neotropical marsupials have somewhat a higher basal metabolic rate (BMR) and thermal conductance (Cm) than Australian ones. In fact, BMR was higher but Cm was lower than expected for their body mass. The higher mass-independent BMR of the Chilean mouse-opossum may be explained by its insectivorous food habits and its low Cm by its...

Factors affecting escape distance in birds Rev. Bras. Zool.
Piratelli,Augusto J.; Favoretto,Gabriela R.; Maximiano,Marina F. de Almeida.
ABSTRACT The flight initiation distance has been used either to understand the cost-benefit trade-offs related to the risk of predation or as an important tool for wildlife managers. Although this variable is well-discussed for temperate regions, it is still poorly known in the Neotropics. Here we analyze the escape behavior of birds from southeastern Brazil, comparing an urban to a non-urban area. We tested for the influence of sites (urban vs. non-urban area), approaching (by one vs. two people), daytime (morning vs. afternoon), seasons (breeding vs. non-breeding) and body mass on the determination of the initial (FID) and final (FFD) flight distances across different bird species. We predict that FID will be greater in rural areas and under a greater...

Mass mortalities of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas reflect infectious diseases and vary with farming practices in the Mediterranean Thau lagoon, France ArchiMer
Pernet, Fabrice; Barret, Jean; Le Gall, Patrik; Corporeau, Charlotte; Degremont, Lionel; Lagarde, Franck; Pepin, Jean-francois; Keck, Nicolas.
Experiments were conducted to investigate the effects of farming sites, seeding date, age of oysters, ploidy level and rearing structures on mortality, pathogens and energetic reserves of oysters Crassostrea gigas. Mortality of oysters coincided with infections involving, primarily, the ostreid herpesvirus OsHV-1 and, secondarily, bacteria of the group Vibrio splendidus, when seawater temperature was between 17 and 24°C. Mortality started in early May and lasted until late September, with an interruption in July and August when seawater temperatures rose above 24°C. Mortality varied with farming site: oysters maintained in the open Mediterranean Sea showed no mortality and OsHV-1 was occasionally detected at a low level only, while oysters maintained in...

Metabolic rates and thermoregulatory characteristics of Akodon azarae (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae) RChHN
ANTINUCHI,C. DANIEL; BUSCH,CRISTINA.
In this work, we evaluated the energetic status, activity daily metabolic rate, thermoregulatory capacity and the existence of torpor in Akodon azarae (Fisher 1829). Basal metabolic rate (BMR) was similar to the expected value from Kleiber´s, and also according to the BMR of phylogenetically related species. No statistical difference in BMR between sexes was detected. For both males and females, activity daily metabolic rate was 235 % of BMR. Body temperature was not statistically different, neither at different ambient temperatures nor between sexes. In the thermoneutral zone, body temperature was 36.1 ± 1.5 °C. Thermal conductance was lower than the expected for mammals whereas thermoregulatory capacity was 136 % of the expected. Akodon azarae did not...

Regional differences in veins wall viscosity, compliance. energetics and damping: analysis of the pressure-diameter relationship during cyclical overloads Biol. Res.
ZÓCALO,YANINA; BIA,DANIEL; LLUBERAS,SEBASTIÁN; ARMENTANO,RICARDO L.
Background: The characterization of the dynamic process of veins walls is essential to understand venous functioning under normal and pathological conditions. However, little work has been done on dynamic venous properties. Aim: To characterize vein compliance (C), viscosity (η), peak-strain (W St) and dissipated (W D) energy, damping (ξ), and their regional differences in order to evalúate their role in venous functioning during volume-pressure overloads. Methods: In a mock circulation, pressure (P) and diameter (D) of different veins (anterior cava, jugular and femoral; from 7 sheep), were registered during cyclical volume-pressure pulses. From the P-D relationship, C, W St and ξ (at low and high P-D leveis), η and W D...
